A WALK IN THE PARK

Sponsored walkIn scorching heat on a glorious Saturday in May, the intrepid team of Rona Barford, Rosemary Heneghan, Gilly Macmeeken, Brenda Moss, Jane Tozer, and Shelley Harrington set off on a 10 mile hike to raise money for TVAP. While some looked for excuses to stay away, Sheila Dickie squeezed in 5 miles between family commitments.

The team started at the Adventure Playground and wandered along the Jubilee River, joined by waterfowl, ponies, bicycles, and beneficiaries of TVAP in wheelchairs. The path then meandered through parkland and countryside to reach the Thames where waterfowl gave way to cabin cruisers, canal boats, stately homes (including Windsor Castle), and unidentified flora. A (too) brief stop for refreshment at Boveney Weir Lock allowed the ladies to enjoy the slow pace of the river before the final 5 mile stretch back to base.

Unlimited free Mars bars and lots of water sustained the trekkers, as well as the good wishes and donations of BGS members, family and friends who helped raise more than £1,215. A big thanks to all.

CHAMPAGNE LIFESTYLE

champagne 2010

A select group of 16 members spend the last days of summer at Lac de l'Ailette near Reims, France during the grape harvest. Their days are taken up with golf on dew-kissed fairways in glorious sunshine, and exploring the amazing countryside. Evenings find them sipping champagne (or other bubbly brews) on the lakeside terrace as a full moon heralds the first day of autumn. What were you doing?

CAPTAIN OUTRAGEOUS

In his first significant event since slipping on the Captain's holey green sweater, Dave Tulloch hosted President Terry Wall at Test Valley in the first round of the Singles matchplay championship.

Mindful of the fact that last year Captain Rona Barford put the President out of this competition then lost the Captain v President match in October, David was anxious not to let any flukes influence the result. Tragedy then, when at the par 5 3rd hole he was through the back in four with TW pin high in three. But he rolled in a 60 footer and almost bent the pin in doing so. Apologies accepted.

On the 6th, well off the green with a tight pin position, DT hit a chip that again struck the pin firmly before dropping in, turning a possible half into an immediate loss for the Pres. Surely it would be a long time before it could possibly happen again? Well, yes, in atomic-clock time perhaps but, at the next hole Dave rolled in another putt, uphill from off the far side of the green when a half looked a certainty.

Clearly the situation would now reverse with the next outrageous putt or chip going the other way. Another very long putt dropped - this time on the green and only 20 feet, but it was again the Cap'n who rolled it in, eventually winning 3&1 with a nett 66 on his card thanks to all those wonderful shots.

Sadly, he will regret not saving some for his next Club medal as most were on stroke holes where he would have won by two-putting. Event organiser John Moss commented, "Remarkable how well these guys who have just retired score when they can play all week!" Terry replied: "Anyone prepared to take on the role of Captain deserves all the fortune they can get, and, well played David; but why against me?"!

Worplesdon

Doubles Trouble

matchplayThe 2011 final of the BGS Matchplay Doubles championship was held at wonderful Worplesdon (if only we could afford to play there as a society).

Mike Mawtus's unrelenting par golf and the always threatening Bill Quain were clear victors by 5 and 4 over Martin Smith and Dave Dickie on a beautiful sunny day.

Pictures here show everyone as good friends on the first tee, the signature hole over water at the 10th (where Dave Dickie's 2 was the losers' happy moment) and a tree felling summing up the match for some. Well done Mike and Bill! (Click image to enlarge.)
