Official Charity

Matchplay Rules:

  • All players must be members of the society.

  • Players whose names are shown in bold have the choice of venue. In later rounds, players who have had the smaller proportion of venue choices have the choice of venue. The organiser will advise who has choice of venue.

  • The home-course players should make the first offer of dates; though contacting the others and agreeing a playing date is the responsibility of all the players. The organiser must be notified immediately if a date cannot be agreed.

  • The matches should be played from the society tees of the day. These are often, but not always, the yellow tees for men and red for ladies. If there is a disagreement, the direction of the local golf professional should be sought.
  • Handicaps:

    • Any person not playing at their home course will receive one additional shot on their handicap. In normal circumstances this will mean the "away" player gets an extra shot; but if both players belong to the same club, no additional shots are given. This does not apply to the Doubles.
    • Matches should be played off either your current BGS handicap or your club handicap, whichever is lower.
    • In Singles competition, the higher handicap player will receive the full difference.
    • In Doubles competition, normal 3/4 difference from the lowest player.
    • If a lady has the lowest handicap (after adjustment for SSS - see below) and she is giving shots, the match should use the ladies' (red) stroke indices.

  • If the ladies' SSS is higher than the men's, they receive that number of extra shots. In the Doubles, this is before the 3/4 handicap calculation is made.

  • Guest green fees in Doubles should be shared among all non-members playing. The visiting player should pay the green fee in the Singles matches.

  • The four Finals may be subsidised and will be played on neutral courses.

  • Losers of their first match will be drawn for the Plate competitions.

  • The organiser should be notified immediately of the result of each match by the winners, who should contact their next opponents as shown on the website. First match losers entering the Plate should contact the organiser for their next opponent.

  • Matches halved after 18 should be decided by playing on if possible. If not, a replay before the closing date or a putting competition or a coin-toss should decide.

  • The final completion date for each round is shown on the draw. Please make every effort to complete the matches prior to that date.

  • Players may be scratched if no results are notified within two days after the closing date for the round. Extensions may be allowed at the organiser's discretion if the following-round opponents can accommodate the extension.
